Lobstermen say nearly every part of fishing costs more, from fuel and bait to traps, rope and insurance—yet the price they receive for lobster has not risen at the same pace. In Maine, gasoline climbed above $4.50 per gallon this year, and diesel was about $4.60 a gallon in late May at Glen’s Lobsters on Mackerel Cove, up more than $1 from a year ago, linked to disruptions tied to the Iran war affecting production and shipping. Traps now run about $150 to $200; a typical 4-foot trap cost roughly $180 in early August at Sea Rose Traps. Operators are adapting by stretching trap replacement schedules and delaying visits to reduce fuel. Boat costs are also climbing, with ready-to-fish fiberglass vessels estimated at about $350,000 for 35 feet and $1 million for 50 feet. Prices for other gear, including rope (nearly $150) and lobster buoys ($12.95, up from $10.75 in 2021), add to the squeeze.
