Former US Marine Robert Gilman released from detention in Russia

Robert Gilman, a U.S. citizen and former Marine, was released from years of detention in Russia on humanitarian grounds, according to a State Department spokesperson confirmed Tuesday. The official said Gilman joins more than 100 Americans freed by the U.S. during President Trump’s second term, and that the administration will keep working for the return of Americans “unjustly detained,” including Stephen Hubbard. Gilman’s release followed serious health concerns, and his family reported he is traveling to a U.S. military hospital in Texas for medical and psychological assessment and treatment. Detained since 2022, Gilman was sentenced to four and a half years after allegations of assaulting a police officer at a train station; his family denies the charges and says the case was politically motivated. The State Department said the release was not part of a prisoner exchange and included no other concessions. Trump said he discussed Gilman’s release with Russian President Vladimir Putin and wrote that Gilman will land at Andrews Air Force Base tonight. Gilman’s sister said they plan to ensure he receives needed support.
