Ukraine’s General Staff said Russia has suffered about 1,485,200 troops killed or wounded since the start of its full-scale invasion on Feb. 24, 2022. In its Aug. 29 update, the General Staff estimated that 1,420 casualties occurred in the previous day. The report also listed major equipment losses, including 12,310 tanks, 25,241 armored combat vehicles, 141,059 vehicles and fuel tanks, 48,774 artillery systems, 2,070 multiple launch rocket systems, and 440 aircraft, among other categories. It added that Ukraine has not disclosed its own losses, citing operational secrecy. Western think tank assessments generally place Russian losses higher than Ukraine’s; CSIS estimates the ratio at roughly 2.5:1 or 2:1. A separate CSIS report in January 2026 suggested Ukraine has likely incurred between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties from Feb. 2022 to Dec. 2025.
