Gigantic stingray kills mum in 'freak' death on family boat trip
A family boat trip in the Florida Keys ended in the death of Judy Kay Zagorski, 57, after a spotted eagle ray struck her face during a “freak accident,” wildlife officials said. The incident occurred near Marathon, on the Atlantic Ocean side of Vaca Key, while Zagorski was traveling with her family in spring 2008. Authorities reported she was seated at the bow as the vessel moved at about 25 mph, when a 75-pound ray with an estimated six-foot wingspan leapt from the water. The impact knocked her onto the boat floor and the Monroe County medical examiner confirmed she died instantly from blunt force trauma, with multiple skull fractures and direct brain injury. Officials said she showed no signs of puncture wounds from the ray’s venomous barbs, and the father, Virgil Bouck, was at the helm. The ray died in the vessel after the collision.
