Hero deputy rescues wheelchair-bound grandfather who fell into shark-infested waterway

A deputy is set to receive a Lifesaving Award after rescuing a 72-year-old man with a wheelchair-bound grandfather who fell into shark-infested water near New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Bill Von Herbulis was fishing and checking crab traps daily at a marina when, on Sept. 27, his wheelchair toppled off a dock. Sgt. William Leven jumped in during feeding time and helped pull him to safety, lifting him over sharp oyster shells and barnacle-encrusted dock pylons. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office posted video of the rescue on Facebook the next day. Von Herbulis said the incident didn’t derail his routine, saying “I was back the next day.”
