Least 139 migrants, including children, die after boat capsizes off Djibouti
xCruzo Brief
At least 139 migrants, including children, have died after a boat carrying 305 people capsized off Djibouti in East Africa, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said Sunday. Another 84 people were reported missing, in what the IOM called one of the deadliest shipwrecks on the crossing from the Horn of Africa to the Arabian Peninsula. The vessel was traveling from Djibouti to Yemen when it overturned late Thursday or early Friday, and more than 80 survived, all Ethiopian nationals. Personal items, including shoes, were seen on a beach in an IOM video. The IOM said tens of thousands travel annually through Djibouti and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait toward Gulf countries, amid continued dangers despite renewed fighting in Yemen.
