How does UND plan to handle this weekend's exhibitions?

UND coach Dane Jackson wants his Fighting Hawks to shift from “summer-hockey mode” as they host two exhibition games this weekend against Augustana University (6:07 p.m. Saturday) and the University of Manitoba (3:07 p.m. Sunday). Jackson said the team needs a direct, fast, hard style more typical of playoff time, including cleaner decision-making and fewer soft turnovers in the defensive zone. The exhibitions are also important because the regular schedule is demanding: a home-and-home vs. Bemidji State on Oct. 9-10, followed by games against Bentley, Minnesota, No. 3 Michigan State and No. 8 Western Michigan. UND won the Penrose Cup and reached the Frozen Four last season, but more than half the roster is new, with 10 freshmen and four transfers. Freshman defenseman Bauer Dumanski is expected to miss both games due to injury. Sophomore goalie Jan Špunar is slated to start Saturday; coach said it’s still undecided whether he’ll play a full game or share time with Caleb Heil.
