How safe are the waters you swim in? Take our poll
Concerns about the safety of European swim waters are at the center of a new poll after a report found that 85% of monitored sites achieved the top “excellent” bathing-water quality rating. Coastal waters performed better than inland rivers and lakes, helped by natural circulation and faster dilution of contaminants. Still, nearly 300 locations across the EU failed to meet basic safety thresholds, prompting immediate swimming bans. The report attributes the failures mainly to agricultural runoff and sewage overflows during heavy rainfall, alongside recurring problems linked to industrial chemical contamination and insufficient urban wastewater infrastructure. EU rules are enforced through the legally binding Bathing Water Directive, including regular testing for bacteria such as E. coli during the swimming season. The poll results will be featured across EU-wide XL coverage, shaping follow-up reporting.
