India will monitor Chinese steel imports before deciding on further curbs, source says
India will monitor Chinese steel imports for at least two more months before deciding whether to extend or add curbs, a source told Reuters on June 23. The country imposed a three-year import tariff in December on selected products aimed at limiting cheaper shipments from China. Even with that measure, India remained a net importer for a second straight month in May, when finished steel imports reached 0.7 million metric tons, above the previous six-month average. Finished steel exports were 0.5 million metric tons, below that average. The source said there is not yet a decision on anti-dumping duties or other steps. The steel ministry had also asked the finance ministry to withdraw a provisional anti-dumping duty on low-ash metallurgical coke, but no final ruling was reported.
