Jig Is Up For Husband-and-wife Squid Poaching Couple

A husband-and-wife squid poaching case has resulted in major penalties in South Australia. The couple was fined $5,725 each after being caught with 124 southern calamari, more than four times the daily allowable bag limit. The catch was ruled a commercial quantity and was found without authorization. They were ordered to appear in the Christies Beach Magistrates Court on 4 September, where each defendant was convicted and required to pay fines, penalties and costs totaling $5,725. Magistrate Martin also forfeited their catch and fishing gear, including rods, tackle bags, an esky and buckets.
