Kerala rains leave eight dead, eight missing; nearly 5,800 in relief camps

Kerala’s Chief Minister V D Satheesan said heavy rains the previous day left eight people dead, eight missing and 13 injured, after landslides, waterlogging and damage to property in multiple parts of the state. In his statement, Satheesan reported 27 houses were completely destroyed and 196 were partially damaged, with 5,792 people moved to 209 relief camps. He urged vigilance—especially in hilly areas—even as rainfall decreased. Clean-up efforts started in flooded and waterlogged areas, and representatives and volunteers were active in relief work. Kerala State Disaster Management Authority data cited up to 320 mm of rainfall in parts of Saturday, including 320 mm at Ayyankunnu in Kannur. Some road damage has been repaired, though restrictions remain in certain areas.
