A lifeboat was called out to help a drifting vessel on the West Cumbrian coastline after it began taking on water about three miles north of Maryport. Maryport Rescue launched its lifeboat following a request from Belfast Coastguard at 10:52am on August 12. The e-ON Spirit of Maryport was dispatched to assist, and a Solway Firth fishery protection vessel reached the situation first and confirmed everyone on board was safe. Crews then assessed the cause: the skipper reported an issue with the engine cooling system, with water ingress stopping once the engine was shut down. Because of the fault’s nature, the lifeboat placed the vessel under tow, returning it safely to Maryport at 11:40hrs. Maryport Rescue said the vessel was well equipped and included emergency pumps.
