xCruzo Brief

Arctic char in Maine are displaying vivid orange-red spawning colors, turning fall scenery into something you can also cast a line for. The cold-water fish—also called blueback trout and Sunapee trout—are native to only Maine and Alaska, with Maine populations found in 14 lakes and ponds, many managed as state heritage fish waters. As water temperatures cool in late September, Arctic char move from deep summer areas, becoming easier to reach. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife says most Arctic char waters close Sept. 30, with Bald Mountain Pond the exception, staying open through Nov. 30 under special rules.
