Marine who vanished off USS Anchorage in SoCal identified -- as his family demands answers
A Marine reported missing off the USS Anchorage in Southern California has been identified as Lance Corporal Armando Ortiz Canseco, as his family held an emotional vigil in Minnesota. The 21-year-old, a Minnesota native and Richfield-area son, was prayed over at Oak Grove Lutheran Church in Richfield on Sunday night, with relatives demanding answers after details remained limited. Ortiz Canseco was assigned to the USS Anchorage while training with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit and the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, according to CBS8. The U.S. Navy launched search and recovery shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday. After more than 43 hours covering about 2,400 square miles using three surface ships and 12 aircraft, no traces were found, and he was declared dead on Saturday. Reports also noted medals including the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal.
