Maui County voters to decide 8 charter amendments, 2 state constitutional amendments. What would the changes mean?

Maui County voters are set to weigh in on eight proposed charter amendments and two state constitutional amendments this fall, including one aimed at helping fund infrastructure for housing projects. The county is also moving to dissolve an Independent Nomination Board—an 11-member panel created after voters previously approved a charter change intended to fill volunteer boards and commissions. Maui County Council Member Keani Rawlins-Fernandez said the board “did not achieve” its goals and added hurdles. The charter amendments on the ballot address planning and petition deadlines, excluding weekends and holidays from charter deadline calculations, streamlining claims filing, and language changes to the Hawai‘i motto.
