Migration deals with third-party countries cut small boat arrivals by up to 90pc
xCruzo Brief
Research by the Henry Jackson Society (HJS) says migration deals involving third countries can sharply reduce small-boat arrivals across Europe. The analysis found agreements where states take back migrants or intercept crossings cut arrivals in destination countries by 58% to 93%. The pattern held across UK-Albania, EU-Turkey and Tunisia deals, plus Italy-Libya and Spain-Morocco. It also reports deaths during attempted crossings fell by more than half after the deals. The report, published Sunday, argues such arrangements can deter Channel and Mediterranean attempts. It adds Labour’s France “one in, one out” plan collapsed and the Rwanda deportation scheme was never fully tested.
