Mount Vernon police officer shoots man barricaded inside apartment

A Mount Vernon police officer shot an armed man who barricaded himself inside an apartment during a mental health crisis, according to police. The Emergency Services Unit responded to a mental health commitment order just before 10 p.m. Thursday near Columbus Avenue and East Fourth Avenue. Officers said the man was armed when they arrived and refused to comply with the court order. Police attempted non-lethal methods and later obtained a warrant after negotiation efforts were exhausted. Hostage negotiators and mental health experts tried to de-escalate the situation, but the man still would not leave, while threatening to harm himself and officers. After another non-lethal attempt, officers shot him. He was transported to a local hospital. New York State Police is investigating.
