New French route cuts Jersey oyster firm's export costs
A new veterinary export inspection service in Granville, France, is expected to save Jersey’s oyster exporters tens of thousands of pounds in logistics costs. The facility opened on 21 October, ending a post-Brexit requirement that products of animal origin be routed through St Malo for border control. Chris Le Masurier, managing director of Jersey Oyster Company, said using St Malo added about two and a half days versus a one-day round trip to Granville, effectively costing roughly £100,000 extra per year. He also warned Jersey fishers remain disadvantaged versus French competitors, citing fuel subsidies and direct same-day sales. Jersey’s Environment Minister Mary Le Hegarat said expanded species exports with France will help reduce Brexit-related costs and support sustainable aquaculture links to Normandy.
