New Miami Heat forward Bobby Portis: ''I was born to be a Heatle'
Bobby Portis presented his move to the Miami Heat as the culmination of a long pursuit, speaking during introductions at the Kaseya Center on Thursday, July 16. The 31-year-old forward was acquired in the same blockbuster deal that brought Giannis Antetokounmpo to South Florida, and Portis described his early Heat fandom growing up in Little Rock, Arkansas. He cited specific memories, including the Heat’s Finals runs versus the Mavericks in 2011 and the Spurs in 2013. Miami Heat president Pat Riley said the signing had been a “long time coming,” and credited Portis as a versatile power-forward. Coach Erik Spoelstra characterized Portis, listed at 6-foot-9 and 250 pounds, as having a physical “lunch pail” mentality that adds toughness to the frontcourt. Portis also recalled a tense sideline collision with Spoelstra during the 2023 playoffs involving the Heat and Bucks. Both framed the moment as something resolved as they now share a roster.
