Montana Fishing Report - May 30th

Runoff season is in full swing across much of Montana, yet fishing remains productive in many waters, with guides noting shifting schedules, spicy winds, and the need for flexible plans. Freestone rivers, including portions of the Yellowstone, Clark Fork and Bitterroot, are running high and carrying color, prompting anglers to focus on tailwaters, reservoirs and smaller tributaries that hold better clarity, often demanding heavier setups and adjusted tactics. The Missouri continues to be one of the state's most reliable fisheries, with trout feeding on nymphs, worms and streamers. Canyon Ferry is producing decent walleye and perch action, while Fort Peck anglers find success with walleye and smallmouth along rocky structure and windblown shorelines. Stillwater fishing is becoming a great option as temperatures warm, and many smaller lakes show active trout cruising shorelines during the early morning and evening hours. If you're heading out this weekend, flexibility will be your best friend, as conditions can change quickly with afternoon weather shifts, but there are still plenty of fish willing to bite if you locate clean water.
