Louisiana Free Fishing Weekend: What You Need to Know
Louisiana is once again designating Free Fishing Weekend, allowing residents and non-residents to fish without a license on June 6 and 7. The annual event, championed by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, aims to encourage families to enjoy one of the state’s beloved pastimes. Licenses are waived, but all fishing regulations remain in effect, including size limits, seasons, catch limits, and gear restrictions. A free Recreational Offshore Landing Permit is still required for certain offshore species during the weekend, and anglers must register for the ROLP on the LDWF website.
LDWF Secretary Tyle Bosworth described the weekend as an opportunity to create memories and introduce newcomers to fishing. Outside Free Fishing Weekend, anglers 18 and older must obtain a Louisiana fishing license at LouisianaOutdoors.com. For the offshore portion, the ROLP registration is mandatory on the LDWF site. The department emphasizes that licensing rules apply year-round, so anyone who continues fishing after June 7 must purchase a license.
