Stanley T. Browne, born Jan. 11, 1923, in Grand Falls, New Brunswick, died at age 103 on July 2, 2026. Raised in Limestone, Maine, he graduated from Limestone High School in 1941. During World War II, he volunteered for the draft and, after becoming a U.S. citizen, joined the U.S. Army, serving in Algeria, Italy, France and Germany as a member of the Military Police Battalion, reaching second lieutenant by war’s end. After returning in 1945, he worked as a potato inspector and later began a 37-year career with the Maine State Department of Agriculture, eventually becoming the first Director of Animal Welfare for Maine. He married Dorothy Hechler in January 1948, and the couple moved to Augusta in July 1950. Browne lived on Riverside Drive from 1950 to 2020, later moving to Granite Hill Estates in Hallowell, and then to the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta in November 2025. Private graveside services will be held later, with arrangements handled by Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home.
