Obituary: Wellington Oliver "Bud" Sawyer
Wellington Oliver “Bud” Sawyer, a 94-year-old longtime broadcaster in Southern Maine, died peacefully on Oct. 27, 2026. Born Dec. 4, 1931, in Boston, he graduated from Boston Technical High School and Boston University’s School of Communication. During his senior year, while producing a church-related variety show, he met his future wife, Janet; they married three years later. Sawyer built a “legendary” career at WGAN, WLOB and WPOR, covering major local events including the Friendship Sloop Races, Monhegan Island Race and lobster boat races in Casco Bay. He was a member of the Maine Broadcasting Hall of Fame, and at WGAN and WPOR teamed with newsman Mike Audet, ranking highly in ratings. He was active in the community, served as a baseball umpire, received multiple awards including the Hope Award from the Multiple Sclerosis Society, and is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years and several children and grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held later.
