One Person Is Dead and Three Are Missing After Boat Capsizes Near Alcatraz
One person died and three others were still unaccounted for after a pleasure boat capsized in San Francisco Bay on Tuesday afternoon, according to fire officials. Lt. Mariano Elias of the San Francisco Fire Department said 16 people were rescued, and three of them had injuries severe enough to require hospital treatment. Elias also reported that a dog aboard died. Investigators said there were 20 people on the three-story vessel in total, and that three passengers remained missing late Tuesday night, while earlier estimates had counted 19 with two missing because they had not included the captain. The passengers were family members scattering ashes in the bay waters, and officials said the group was not from the Bay Area. Rescue teams from multiple departments searched through the evening into the morning. Officials said the vessel was about 600 yards from Alcatraz and capsized around 3:30 p.m., but the cause remained unclear, after earlier reports of fire were later denied.
