World Oceans Day 2026 spotlights a global crisis in marine ecosystems, anchored by Bonaire’s famed reef and its snorkelers and divers. The day’s Reimagine theme emphasizes oceans as sources of air, food and climate regulation, not distant surfaces, even as warming, plastic pollution and overfishing threaten coral and biodiversity. Bonaire’s waters host a rich array of life, from turtles and sharks to rays and whales, illustrating what may be lost without decisive conservation actions.

Three principal threats define the current peril: overfishing, plastics, and warming and acidification. Global fish stocks show about 35.5 percent overfished in 2024, while overfishing has surged threefold since 1970. Plastic debris dominates ocean litter, with millions of tonnes entering seas yearly and plastics accounting for roughly 85 percent of it. Warming and acidification compound stress on corals and marine life, underscoring the need for coordinated international stewardship to safeguard livelihoods and ecosystems.
