Poll results support change in child sexual abuse law
A MassINC Polling Group survey commissioned by Herman Law shows broad support in Massachusetts for eliminating the statute of limitations on civil complaints alleging child sexual abuse. Released Thursday by Enough Abuse, the poll found 84% of 802 registered voters surveyed online from Sept. 14 to Sept. 19 support removing the deadline, including 74% of independents, and 85% each of Democrats and Republicans. It also found 79% want lawmakers to vote for elimination, and 67% say it should be a high priority. The state’s current 35-year limit starts when the alleged victim turns 18. Attorney General Andrea Campbell’s 203-page report last week on Catholic clergy abuse in Fall River, Springfield and Worcester recommended the change, alongside legislation now moving through the House and Senate.
