Professional surfer Arran Strong, 28, presumed dead after going missing of the coast of Portugal

Professional surfer Arran Strong, 28, has been presumed dead four days after going missing off the coast of Portugal, the UK sports governing body confirmed. Strong disappeared about a mile offshore while with his coach, Jose Maria Pyrrait, near Arrifana. Pyrrait said they stopped to drink water and take pictures; after he let Strong paddle ahead due to his faster pace, he later saw Strong’s board drifting roughly 100 meters away. Pyrrait repeatedly dove to find it, but visibility was poor in deep water. The pair alerted authorities at 11:33 BST Monday, and Pyrrait’s friend was rescued by a nearby fishing boat. Authorities halted the search Thursday. Strong was the highest-ranked British surfer in the last two ISA World Surf Games and competed in the World Surf League for a decade.
