Reel Moments Make Real Impact: How Marine Toys for Tots Is Taking Childhood Outdoors
Momentous fishing moments can spark lifelong confidence, and Marine Toys for Tots highlights this through Give and Go: Outdoor Adventures Start with You during National Fishing Week, June 6–14. In Maple Shade, New Jersey, the program partnered with local coordinator Gina Capate to host a hands-on fishing event for foster children. Twenty-four youths learned basic skills, received a fishing pole and a personal bag, and experienced a day of outdoor activity in a supportive setting. Volunteers, local leaders, and law enforcement mentors emphasized patience, teamwork, and resilience.
Lt. Gen. Jim Laster, USMC (Retired) and president of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, described the day as more than recreation, a catalyst for lasting confidence. The Give and Go initiative aims to widen outdoor access for underserved children who often lack safe play opportunities, books, or toys. These moments, organizers say, plant seeds of curiosity and belonging that extend beyond a single afternoon. The program underscores a broad community commitment to uplifting youth through outdoor experiences.
