Rescuers find remains of kayaker who vanished off South Padre Island

Rescuers recovered the body of William Raney, 59, of Midland, after he vanished while kayaking off South Padre Island over the Labor Day weekend. Authorities confirmed he was dead at 2:21 p.m. Tuesday, following a three-day search at sea and by air. Cameron County Park Rangers and Texas Game Wardens located and recovered Raney’s body in the Gulf. He had been reported missing at about 4:10 p.m. Saturday after a concerned beachgoer alerted a park ranger that Raney, last seen a quarter-mile north of Cameron County Beach Access No. 6, was no longer visible offshore. The Coast Guard conducted a six-hour search Saturday using two aircraft and a boat over 168 nautical miles. The circumstances remain under investigation.
