Rifles offer mixed results at range | Arkansas Democrat Gazette
A range report from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s Shooting Sports Complex near Mayflower describes a day of testing .30-caliber rifles, with results described as mixed. The writer fired a Remington Model 700 in .308 Winchester owned by Alan Thomas of Conway and a Winchester Model 70 Classic Super Grade in 30-06 Springfield. Ammunition included 220-grain Federal soft points and 150-grain Monarch soft points for the 30-06, and multiple loads for the .308 Winchester: 150-grain Remington Core-Lokts, 150-grain Sig Sauer soft points, and Federal Premium rounds with 168-grain Sierra MatchKing bullets. The session was at 92 degrees with 56% humidity and negligible wind. After swapping scopes on the Winchester from a Leupold VX-3 3-9x40 to a Nikon Buckmasters 3-9x50, the rifle produced about 1-inch groups at 50 yards and around 1.5 inches at 100 yards, with heavier 220-grain rounds landing 6 inches low and 2 inches left before further scope adjustment. The Remington’s tactical 16-inch threaded bull barrel and suppressor compatibility are also described, with close initial grouping but third-shot inconsistencies using a Caldwell shooting bag.
