Search suspended overnight for six missing after charter boat sinks off Richmond
Search efforts for six people missing after a charter boat sank off Richmond were suspended overnight, with the investigation moved to the RCMP. The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) Victoria said its search and rescue operation ended at 9:45 p.m. Sunday after nearly 10 hours. The incident began around 11:45 a.m., when JRCC Victoria received a report from a civilian vessel about several people in the water without lifejackets, roughly 10 nautical miles southwest of Vancouver International Airport near Roberts Bank. By 1:15 p.m., four people had been rescued and taken to the Sea Island Coast Guard Station before transfer to BC Emergency Health Services. It is believed the charter vessel had 10 people onboard. JRCC tasked multiple aircraft and vessels, including a CH-149 Cormorant helicopter and CC-295 Kingfisher aircraft. Ferry service between Metro Vancouver and Nanaimo was temporarily disrupted before resuming later.
