Shipwreck, apparent human remains found 7 years after fishing boat sank off Rhode Island

A wreck off Rhode Island first reported on New Year’s Day 2019 appears to have been located, years after the F/V Mistress sank with three men aboard. Green Oceans, an ocean protection nonprofit, said Tuesday that sonar work found a potential wreck site 92 feet underwater in July, and divers visited the area Aug. 30 to document features matching the 52-foot commercial fishing vessel. The organization also found human remains believed to belong to one of the two fishermen who died. Green Oceans has asked the U.S. Department of the Interior to reopen investigations and assess whether the nearby Block Island Wind Farm may have affected the wreck and the rescue efforts.
