Tall ship will make a rare trip up the Penobscot River to Bangor this week
xCruzo Brief
The 131-foot schooner Harvey Gamage is set to make a rare run up the Penobscot River to Bangor this week—its second visit in about four decades. The ship will dock in Bucksport on Thursday, with public events planned through Aug. 2 as part of celebrations tied to Penobscot Bay and the lower river marking the country’s 250th anniversary. The Penobscot Maritime Heritage Association, which promotes 4PortLoop events, says the river functioned as an “interstate” corridor for generations of commerce. The Harvey Gamage was launched in 1973 and is operated by Phin Sprague’s Marine Learning Project, aimed at giving high school and college students sailing access.
