Tanjung Embang deep-sea port to anchor Sarawak's transformation beyond 2030
Tanjung Embang deep-sea port to anchor Sarawak's transformation beyond 2030 reports that Sarawak’s Premier, Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg, is backing development of a deep-sea port at Tanjung Embang near Kuching as a driver for the state’s transformation after 2030. Speaking at Sarawak Energy Bhd’s (SEB) vendor excellence awards on Wednesday, July 8, he said the project will use new technology in port management to speed ship turnaround and streamline operations. He added that document transactions will be handled digitally before vessels berth, supporting high standards and international compliance. Abang Johari also said a high-tech support zone has been identified, including a data and AI campus, and that a new international airport will be developed to improve connectivity and aviation activity. He noted the Asian Development Bank is interested in participating through green financing and said the development will take at least 15 years. SEB’s CEO Datuk Sharbini Suhaili emphasized international standards, safety, responsibility, efficiency, and environmental obligations. SEB has approved more than RM139 million for vendor development and financing, recognizing 14 vendors across six categories.
