A teenager survived for nearly two days clinging to the hull of an overturned fishing skiff in Alaska’s icy waters before being spotted and rescued on Monday in the remote Bering Sea. Two other people aboard the vessel died. The U.S. Coast Guard said an HC-130 Hercules aircraft from Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak located the capsized boat about 4 miles east of St. Lawrence Island at around 3 p.m., roughly 48 hours after the incident began. Coast Guard aircrew dropped a life raft and survival gear and used flares to guide the nearby motor vessel Northwest Explorer, a good Samaritan that assisted with the response. Rear Adm. Bob Little said rescue efforts by the Northwest Explorer, federal, state, village first responders, and mission partners resulted in one life saved.
