Toronto saw significant increase in speeders after camera removals: Staff report
Toronto’s transportation staff say speeding rose sharply after automated enforcement cameras were removed, with new data showing a clear increase in vehicles traveling above posted limits. The city examined 104 locations where speed cameras previously issued tickets, comparing speeds before November 2025—when Premier Doug Ford’s government removed the cameras—with readings from the later fall of 2025 and spring of 2026. Average speeding at 11 km/h or more over the limit increased from 2% to 8.1%. Mayor Olivia Chow called the change “horrifying,” and urged the cameras’ return ahead of a Wednesday council meeting. In 30 km/h zones, drivers recorded at 16 km/h over rose from 1.4% to 7.2%, while 50 km/h zones rose from 0.5% to 2.9%. Officials note results vary by site, and cite school-zone infrastructure costs and timelines.
