Trump's deportation push forces dozens of LGBT migrants onto hostile terrain
xCruzo Brief
The Supreme Court ruled that President Trump can immediately end deportation protections for Haitians and Syrians previously covered by TPS, and Reuters reports the policy shift is also driving removals of LGBT migrants to third countries with severe anti-gay laws. In Dakar, a Togolese man, Abdou Latifou, said he was attacked two years ago for kissing another man and later won protection in the U.S. Yet in June, instead of being sent back to Togo, he was deported to Sierra Leone, where colonial-era laws allow life imprisonment for gay men. Reuters documented 40 similar cases: 16 remain abroad, some detained; 16 were repatriated; nine are in hiding; and one man has lost contact with lawyers and relatives.
