War At Sea: The Maritime Crisis And The Forgotten Rights Of Seafarers - Analysis
A new analysis says escalating wars have turned major shipping corridors into conflict zones, endangering thousands of seafarers and civilian safety at sea. It points to Russia’s war in Ukraine disrupting Black Sea grain shipments, continued Houthi attacks that force diversions around the Cape of Good Hope, and a post–28 February 2026 confrontation involving the United States, Israel and Iran. The report estimates about 6,000 seafarers are trapped amid deaths, vessel attacks, and prolonged strandings. It argues that international maritime law and naval efforts such as Operation Prosperity Guardian offer limited protection because enforcement is weak and accountability gaps remain. The piece adds that trade depends on roughly two million seafarers, many from developing countries, yet evacuation rights and human security are not prioritized enough.
