Welsh Water to pay out £44.7 million following 'excessive' sewage spills
Welsh Water has agreed to pay £44.7 million after Ofwat found serious failures in its sewage network that led to excessive spills. The redress package, proposed in March, was formally accepted after a consultation period and will not be funded by customers. Ofwat enforcement director Lynn Parker said the investigation uncovered 'serious and unacceptable breaches' in how Welsh Water operated its wastewater assets, resulting in environmental harm. Of the total, £40.6 million will reduce spills, lessen environmental harm, and address groundwater intrusion, while £4.1 million will improve river quality in extremely sensitive catchments. Welsh Water acknowledged shortcomings but noted early signs of improvement in 2025-26, and the plan aims to enhance resilience while bills rise.
