When K-314 submarine rammed USS Kitty Hawk, Soviet Captain was at fault. Navy Submariner tells why.
xCruzo Brief
The collision between the Soviet submarine K-314 and USS Kitty Hawk in March 1984 has been attributed to the Soviet captain, according to a U.S. Navy submariner’s account discussed alongside Naval History and Heritage Command details. The USS Kitty Hawk carrier strike group entered the Sea of Japan for the joint Team Spirit-84 exercise. K-314 was ordered to follow and tracked the carrier for days in “cat-and-mouse” maneuvers. On March 21, after losing contact due to bad weather, K-314 surfaced at about 10 meters, found the carrier just 4–5 kilometers away, and despite an immediate dive order, collided with the CV-63 at night. The near-term context was repeated detections of K-314 by U.S. helicopters.
