Why has Prospect strike action closed Norwich Airport today?

Norwich Airport has shut today because of industrial action by Prospect, the union for air traffic control staff. The airport said the closure is the result of action by members, who voted earlier this month in favour of strike action over pay and working conditions. Prospect said controllers are paid “significantly less” than the UK market rate and face “substandard” maternity and paternity cover. From 17 August, action began “short of a strike,” with staff working strictly to contracts. After talks failed, Prospect scheduled a 24-hour strike for Friday 28 August, with no flights operating for the entire day.
