Agratas 'parts ways' with builders of UK's biggest EV battery plant
Agratas, the Tata Group subsidiary behind the UK’s largest electric vehicle battery plant, has mutually parted ways with the contractor Sir Robert McAlpine, which had completed the first phase of the Somerset facility. McAlpine described the split as mutual, while Agratas said it needed a different construction delivery model to support the next phase and keep the project on track for a late next-year opening. Sir Robert McAlpine pledged a smooth, orderly transition to the new contractor, TSL, to maintain progress as the project advances toward production and commissioning goals in the coming year.
The Somerset plant represents a flagship project in the UK’s growing EV battery sector and underscores Tata’s strategy to secure battery supply for future vehicle programs. The transition signals a shift in execution approach as the project enters its next phase, with TSL taking over responsibilities to sustain momentum and hit milestones toward commercial operation.
