Austrian Grand Prix qualifying: Russell claims dramatic pole after late Verstappen crash
George Russell claimed dramatic pole for Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix, but confirmation arrived only after an anxious wait following a late Max Verstappen crash. In the final moments of Q3, Verstappen lost the rear of his car at turn nine and hit the barriers, while Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton had set the pace on their last runs. Russell then crossed the line two-tenths ahead of Leclerc despite confusion over whether yellow flags at the crash site were single or double waved. He said he lifted about 100 meters before the last corner and felt the pole should stand. After stewards decided no investigation was necessary, Russell’s time was accepted. He said he felt “incredible” after what he described as an exceptional lap with a large lift in the final corner. The pole remains tied to the incident’s flag interpretation as the grid is set for tomorrow.
