BBC announcement prompts questions from England fans after World Cup win
A BBC announcement about audience figures for England’s World Cup win over Mexico prompted questions from fans, according to the report. The 3-2 victory drew a peak live audience of 9.1 million on BBC One and an average of 7.8 million, despite a 2 a.m. kickoff delayed by thunderstorms in Mexico City and followed by a working week. The coverage said the performance more than tripled the previous BBC record for a broadcast between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m., set during the Rio Olympics in 2016. The match accounted for an 86% share of viewers at that time, leading to online reactions about who watched other programming. The BBC said match highlights were streamed a record 5.9 million times, and Harry Kane’s post-match interview clip reached 65 million views. England’s quarter-final against Norway is set for 10 p.m. UK time, with ITV expected to broadcast.
