Built 250,000 EVs That Could Power the Grid. The Hard Part Was Never the Technology

GM says it has built more than 250,000 electric vehicles capable of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) power flow—yet the company argues most won’t do it soon due to utility regulatory barriers rather than technology. On July 27, GM published results from a study commissioned from energy consulting firm E3, projecting V2G could become a $7 billion market by 2030 and claiming exporting electricity could be worth 5 to 15 times more than shifting charging times. GM paired the report with a firmware update enabling V2G for existing GM Energy customers and pilot work with DTE Energy in Michigan and plans with PG&E in Northern California.
