Canada Targets Big American Motorcycles With A 50% Tariff

Canada is set to impose a 50% tariff starting September 8 on U.S.-origin motorcycles with internal-combustion engines larger than 800cc, targeting a flagship segment of American manufacturing. The levy will affect much of Harley-Davidson’s Canadian range, as well as bikes from Indian Motorcycle and other U.S. brands. The measure is part of Ottawa’s broader retaliation in a widening trade dispute after U.S. duties followed the collapse of negotiations. Canada says its countermeasures cover $27.6 billion of American imports and range from 15% to 50%. The government also chose products tied to specific U.S. states. Harley, based in Milwaukee, sold 6,434 motorcycles in Canada in 2025.
