Canyon's new e-bike can communicate with cars - but is it bikes that need to change?
Canyon’s new e-bike can communicate with cars, a capability aimed at improving visibility and safety for cyclists in city traffic. The Roadlite:On e-bike is close to mass production and debuts with a V2X (Vehicle 2 Everything) system designed to let cars and bikes exchange signals. Canyon says the setup includes a nano-board in the downtube and a GPS antenna in the headtube, sending alerts to vehicle displays and prompting vibrations on the left or right handlebar grip for the rider. Through connected devices, the cyclist can also receive visual information, and in some trial areas the bike may work with traffic-light “green waves” for bicycles. A dynamic braking light and radar system can alert drivers to a rider’s intended actions. Canyon plans to show the bike at Eurobike next week and reports safety statistics for the US and Germany, citing cyclist deaths rising while car-occupant deaths have fallen in Germany.
