CEO wants you to buy self-driving cars and drive EVs in the AI future | Fortune

GM CEO Mary Barra told Fortune in an interview that the company is preparing for an “AI future” for driving, while still treating electric vehicles as the industry’s “end game.” Barra said US EV adoption has slowed due to regulatory changes, charger permitting delays, and consumer concerns about long-distance trips. GM plans to keep both its internal-combustion and EV lines while adding hybrids in selected segments, and it reported selling more than 700,000 vehicles under $35,000 last year. On autonomy, GM aims to introduce eyes-off highway driving in the Cadillac Escalade IQ in 2028, building on Super Cruise’s hands-free but eyes-on capability. Barra also discussed GM’s Cruise exit from robotaxis, redirecting the software effort toward personal autonomy, and described OnStar and Super Cruise as recurring-revenue software businesses.
