Closes 2022 probe into 695,000 Tesla vehicles over unexpected braking
U.S. regulators have closed a 2022 review of Tesla vehicles tied to unexpected braking and deceleration. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it closed its preliminary evaluation covering 695,000 Tesla vehicles after concluding there was low demonstrated hazard to drivers and a substantial drop in reported incidents. The investigation covered Model 3 and Model Y, and NHTSA noted Tesla released software updates in early 2022 aimed at addressing unexpected deceleration. Incident reports declined to 45 in 2024, 19 in 2025, and three since the start of 2026, compared with 300 reports when the probe began. The regulator also said the reported conditions did not change the vehicle’s lane positioning and did not cause significant loss of following distance that would lead to a collision.
