Connecticut Work Zone Speed Cameras Now Operating; $75 Fines Begin July 6 as Stratford Attorney Advises Motorists on Rights and Exposure
Connecticut’s automated work-zone speed cameras began scanning highways on June 1, 2026, with fines of $75 set to start July 6 under the CTDOT Know the Zone program. During pre-enforcement testing, the system logged 1.36 million speeding incidents among 8.4 million vehicle scans, indicating a broad reach once fully active. Cameras currently operate at three locations: I-95 Interchange 43 in West Haven, I-95 Interchange 74 in East Lyme, and Route 2 in Colchester, with more sites planned as construction progresses. The cameras flag vehicles traveling 10 mph or more over the posted work-zone limit, triggering either warnings or violations.
Attorney Raymond W. Ganim of Ganim Law in Stratford cautions drivers about rights and exposure, noting that the regime imposes financial risk despite the absence of insurance points. Under the program, first offenses generate a written warning; a second violation within a calendar year incurs a $75 fine, and any vehicle detected at 85 mph or higher receives a $75 fine on the first offense. The no-points framework aims to boost compliance, but motorists still must navigate an administrative process with deadlines to dispute or respond to notices. Connecticut officials expect rapid growth of citations as construction expands statewide.
